You can easily remove the default shell prompt text in bash. It might as well work on other shells too!

vvek@localhost$ export PS1="Whatever>"

and your change takes effect immediately. So your shell now will be,

Whatever>

Mine now is just “|” so there’s room for text! Update your ~/.bashrc file and add the export PS1=”|” there. The change will be permanent this way. You can refer to¬†the list of template strings you can use in PS1 definition from this article.
